Sobre a unidade
Most of the research here was of good standard by international comparison, and some was making significant contributions to their fields. In group 2376 there are four masters’ theses but no doctorate. In group 2378 one doctorate has been produced, and in group 2889 four theses are reported but not at what level. Generally we found postgraduate training to be stronger at the aggregate Unit level than at project level. We were struck very positively by the interest of the Unit in research training and by the efforts that had been given to organising appropriate events, though these seemed occasional rather than regular.
There is a considerable amount of dissemination activity, both in book and journal form, including international outlets. There was no sign of collaboration with other colleagues elsewhere in Portugal on use of new media by children (e.g. Braga). This also applied to ambitious plans for an observatory on children’s TV programming. In some cases the work was tightly focused (e.g. in 2378 on journalism in the Salazar and Caetano periods), and the inevitable national focus of both the work and its audience should not be regarded as diminishing its international stature. Plans for conferences, e.g. on women and the public sphere, seemed credible and serious given a worthy track record.
