Call for Application to Individual Doctoral and Post-Doctoral Grants 2010

On July 21, 2010, alterations affecting foreign applicants were included in the Regulations. These consist of Articles 44-A and 45-A. Changes to Application Forms for the Call to Individual Grants 2010 will be available on July 27. On the same day all applications by foreign citizens canceled on the first phase due to Article 17 will be available for completion, according to the new dispositions, and possible submission on the second phase of the call.

In accordance with the Regulations for Advanced Training and Qualification of Human Resources, and taking into account the Research Grant Holder Statute, published by Law no. 40/2004 of August 18, the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) opens a call for funding of individual grants of the following types:

Post Doctoral Grants (BPD)
These grants are intended for individuals who have already completed a doctoral degree, preferably within the last five years, for the purpose of carrying out advanced research in Portuguese or foreign scientific institutes of recognized merit.
Doctoral Grants (BD)

These grants target holders of a university degree who are accepted as doctoral students in a Portuguese or foreign university.

The FCT calls particular attention to the recent changes in Articles 17, 19 and 20 of the Regulations, concerning the eligibility of foreign citizens’ applications.

The grants are funded by Programa Operacional Potencial Humano of QREN Portugal 2007-2013 and by the national budget through MCTES.

Period of the Call

The call will be open from May 3rd to September 6th and will include two evaluation cycles.

The fist cycle will evaluate all applications sealed before 5pm on June 17th, 2010. The second cycle will evaluate all applications sealed before 5pm on September 6th, 2010.

The individual applications must be submitted by electronic means, using the form available at:

No other means of submission will be allowed. All supporting documents must be scanned and submitted through the application form, in accordance with Article 19th of the Regulations. Whenever possible the Supplement to the Diploma relative to each completed degree must be included (see Portaria no. 30, 2008 of January 10th).

Post Doctoral Grant (BPD) candidates who have not yet completed the doctoral degree should pay special attention to point 6 of Article 19 of the Regulations.

The candidates to BDs, whose acceptance as a doctoral student is dependent on the completion of another degree, can only apply to the grant in the first evaluation cycle if they declare that the latter degree will be awarded by September 30th, 2010; they can only apply to the grant in the second evaluation cycle if they declare that the latter degree will be awarded by December 31st 2010. In case these claims are not fulfilled the grant will not be awarded.

Approved grants, evaluated during the first cycle, may start not before October 1st 2010; approved grants, evaluated during the second cycle, may start not before January 1st 2011.

This call, although including two evaluation cycles, only allows one application, which will be evaluated by the evaluation panel corresponding to the scientific area chosen by the candidate (each candidate may only choose one scientific area). The submission of two applications implies that both will be canceled.

Only applications sealed by the candsidates will be evaluated. The evaluation takes into account the merits of the candidate, work plan and hosting conditions. The evaluation panel for each main scientific domain will receive an evaluation guide, gauge the corresponding applications weighting the evaluation criteria and will produce an ordered list of candidates.
