GENERAL INFORMATIONS

On 15 February 2018, FCT and Fundação “la Caixa” signed the Scientific and Technological Cooperation agreement for the implementation of the Iberian Initiative for Biomedical Research and Innovation, i4b. The protocol is based on Fundação "la Caixa"’s Health Research programme.

The Health Research programme is focused on the support to research and development projects in biomedicine and health and it seeks to identify and engender the most promising, scientifically excellent initiatives, with highest potential and social impact, either in the domain of fundamental, clinical or translational research in five specific areas: oncology, neurosciences, infectious diseases, cardiovascular and metabolic-related diseases and enabling technologies in those areas. Thus far this programme has had two calls for proposals in 2018 and 2019.

The i4b aims at increasing research and development activities in biomedicine and health developed at Portuguese centres under the framework of the Health Research programme, in collaboration with international centres; stimulating knowledge transfer for its employment in the health area; and contributing to people’s wellbeing.

Under i4b and the conditions established by both institutions, FCT is due to match the funding Fundação “la Caixa” aawards to Portuguese teams that lead or participate in research projects selected under the Health Research programme’s calls for proposals. Accordingly, 3 projects with Portuguese leadership or participation fully and exclusively funded by FCT; 7 projects jointly funded by FCT and Fundação “la Caixa”; and 6 projects fully and exclusively funded by Fundação “la Caixa” have been supported (click here).
