Call for joint project proposals - 2017-2019

  • Application Deadline: 24 March 2016

FCT and the Department of Science and Technology of India (DST) hereby launch a call for joint project proposals from Portuguese and Indian research teams, for the 2017-2019 period. This call falls within the framework of the Indo-Portuguese Agreement for Cooperation in Science and Technology (established in 1999).

The Indo-Portuguese Programme of Cooperation in Science and Technology facilitates bilateral cooperation between researchers of the two countries by way of exploratory visits, joint R&D projects, and seminars/workshops. The Department of Science and Technology (Ministry of Science & Technology of India) and FCT (Ministry of Science & Technology and Higher Education of Portugal), are the agencies that implement the programme, in India and in Portugal, respectively.

The programme is open to scientists, engineers, and institutions involved in advanced research in the areas specified in each call, in India and Portugal. Proposals are selected by both parties. Funding is awarded for three years.

This call provides funding for mobility of researchers who are participants in the projects, and encompasses the following scientific areas:

  • 1. Ocean science & technology;
  • 2. Biotechnology and Human Health (focusing improvement in crop productivity, transgenic crops, microbial biotechnology with emphasis on cellulosic biofuel and microbial diversity and bioprospecting);
  • 3. Materials science, including nanotechnology;
  • 4. Chemical sciences;
  • 5. Engineering Sciences including ICT

Financial support available for the exchange visit is as follows: the Portuguese side provides economic/excursion return international airfare up to the relevant entry city of the host country for Portuguese research team and provides local hospitality to Indian research team and Indian side provides economic/excursion return international airfare up to the relevant entry city of the host country for Indian research team and provides local hospitality to Portuguese research team.

Funding for the second year is dependent on submission and approval of the technical/financial report (available from the FCT website). This report should be sent to the Department for International Relations, after completion of the first year exchange.

The Principal Investigator (PI) and other researchers in India and in Portugal should be scientists/faculty members working in a regular capacity in Government-acknowledged universities, academic institutes and national research & development laboratories/institutes. The Indian PI should not be retiring during the proposed duration of the project.

The inclusion of young researchers in the teams is mandatory. Non-compliance leads to exclusion of the application. Priority is given to new projects and/or new teams.

Joint project proposals must be submitted simultaneously by the Portuguese partners to FCT and by the Indian researchers to DST in the set format. Unilaterally submitted projects shall not be considered. The project proposal must include a Principal Investigator (PI) and a Co-PI, each in a different country.

The completed project proposals must reach both the sides by 24 March 2016.
These should include:

  • Application Form (available to download from the FCT website)
  • A signed statement from the host institution and department.

Indian applicants should download the respective Application Forms and Guidelines form the DST website.

The application form and a signed statement may be sent by e-mail to FCT, in PDF format. No other documents will be accepted.

Proposals shall be evaluated according to the following criteria: scientific merit of the proposal; quality of the research teams involved in the proposal; degree of participation of young Portuguese researchers; suitability of the exchange of researchers to the proposed work plan.

All eligible proposals will be evaluated by both sides, and then jointly by the Joint Selection Committee, made up of members of FCT and of the DST of India. Selected proposals will meet the joint interested of both institutions.
