Sobre a unidade
Porto’s “Centro de Investigação em Tecnologias e Sistemas de Informação em Saúde – CINTESIS” is a recently formed Research Unit (coordinator Altamiro Costa Pereira), with young researchers. The main activity field of the Unit comprises research along 3 major lines: Biostatistics (753-3060 – Teixeira-Pinto, officially created in 2007); Health Technologies Assessment and Decision Analysis (753-3082 – Dinis Ribeiro); Health Informatics (753-3083 – Lopes Fonseca). There is considerable interaction between the 3 groups.
The groups don’t differ much in the kind and level of publications; in general the impact of the publications is moderate for the field of medical sciences in general, but comparable to the average of the research field specific of the Unit. Taking into consideration that the researchers are young and that the majority of publications have been made in the course of PhD theses very recently, the number of citations of several of these papers is noteworthy. Furthermore the group “Health Informatics” has produced also a number of patents/prototypes particularly in the field of software; the corresponding products are being used by relatively large numbers of Hospital departments both locally and outside the University Hospital. It is important for CINTESIS to find an appropriate way to bring these products of their research to potential hospital users and to promote their dissemination in the community.
All three groups have generated a fair number of PhD and MSc theses, some of which were completed abroad and/or in collaboration with other institutions. It is remarkable that CINTESIS has been able to attract MSc and PhD students from different disciplines, namely computer sciences, mathematics, economics, and medicine. These students appreciate very positively the multidisciplinary environment offered by CINTESIS and the leadership of the senior staff. The groups have a lot of international contacts and have participated in the organization of a number of scientific meetings. The list of publications of the “Biostatistics” group shows a variety of topics revealing that the group depends much on collaborations to realize its research projects.
The published activities of the group “Health Technologies Assessment and Decision Analysis” are concentrated around two themes: endoscopy screening and vascular pathology.
The group “Health Informatics” published on a rather varied range of topics without a main research field. There are many similar research groups in the world so that it is important for CINTESIS to define a clear focus in order to acquire a well-defined place both in Portugal and in the world.
Evidently such a young group that emerges in an environment that is not very supportive will have a hard time to grow into a generally recognized research group in the Portuguese Health System, although it is clear that its scientific activities are indispensable in a modern system of Health Care.
We don’t rate the different groups separately since their activities are strongly interlocked. We should emphasize that this interlocking is a commendable feature of the Unit.
Very Good unit with some features that should be considered Good.
