Sobre a unidade
The panel reviews this unit as a whole as excellent and emphasizes its productivity and pertinence, the excellent environment for PHD students as well as the many initiatives in professional sociological associations (particularly the European Sociological Association where the unit plays a crucial role) and networks, both national and international. It considers SOCIUS as being at the core of the matters scientific, with excellent expertise and enterprising projects in its key domain: economic sociology.
The panel, however, noted the risks involved in restructuring of existing research lines into new programmatic or thematic groups. This should only been done when there is a clear added value and the transaction costs can be kept at a minimum. The formulation of a new line takes time, a core mission and a conceptual model must be developed and members must be reprogrammed according to the new goals. The panel advises some groups to reduce the heterogeneity of topics and research areas and streamline the overarching programme despite its excellence.
During the period 2003-2006, three groups were in existence.
The group «Economy, space, culture and globalization» (428–035) to be maintained as such in 2007-2010 (428-2064). Its main research topic is « trust » (social construction of trust) with particularly reference to Portugal but in keeping with a comparative perspective. For the current period, efforts will be made to reinforce the common view of the group and to continue its work with economists.
The group «Work and organisation, Science and technology» (428–2103) is also regarded as excellent: it has publications in pr IJ, international networks, important training activity, For the period 2007-2010, this group is subdivided in two: «Work, employment, gender and organisations» (428–2105) and «Science, technology, health and professions» (428–2106).
The group 428-2105 has new research projects, a joined Iberian MA programme and a project with the Association of Labour Lawyers, a particularly original and promising idea. It has also a lot of publications in Spain and Brazil and, through its networks; it will make efforts to enlarge its publications in American and European journals.
The group 428-2106 is partly new, with fresh topics and recent researchers. Though it has interesting plans and ideas, they have not yet been translated into a clear research programme. However in the light of previous work and results, predictions are promising, provided they are concretized. It would perhaps be advisable to reduce the number of research lines. The group is involved in apposite networks but has still to prove their productivity.
The group «Social economy, political sociology, European integration» (428–2068) disappears in 2007-2010 but is considered very good.
For the period 2007-2010, a new group is created (which results from the suppression of 2O68): «Sustainable development, third sector and social nets» (428–2104) which is considered very good. It has international networks and publications in international journals. Methodologies to increase the participation of the actors are here very important as is the collaboration with different scientific disciplines concerned by sustainable development.
