Sobre a unidade
This is a small, highly specialised and very productive group that depends on the enthusiasm and very hard work of essentially five young colleagues under the strong guidance of a highly motivated coordinator. They have managed to become very relevant in respect of certain themes, which have attracted the support of a much larger number of young scholars and PhD students. The panel was impressed by what it heard concerning the centre’s research projects, in particular its comparative study and analysis of the new Portuguese legislation for horizontal property (condominiums) as well as fiscal legislation. The group is very relevant and has an impact. The panel verified that intense and very regular team work was a characteristic of the centre, which is engaged in serious and fundamental research, such as the project on the definition of profit for tax purposes and legislation designed to protect underwater marine resources. Furthermore, the unit has initiated another important niche area, namely, legislation in support of the arts and taxation of performing arts. Past interesting outputs include taxation of sports and sports associations as well as comparative work on transfer pricing. The members of the centre had clear answers to question about the added value of the centre. These focussed on what the centre was able to offer by way of: collaborative research, their ability to attract funding; acting as a focal point for end-users of their research; bringing together complementary disciplines, and bringing together professionals at different stages of their careers. Much more could be done by allowing the centre to become larger. The centre has attained a good international standing with the coordinator having been able to publish in well regarded international publications; and there were several instances of cooperation with other European universities and research institutions. The panel however felt that the unit could improve its focus and might indeed need to concentrate on fewer areas of research. There is thus far only a very broad vision of its future and its research direction and focus.
This is an extremely strong group that has maintained and strengthened its leadership position.
The productivity is prolific, relevant and internationally recognized.
