Comentários do painel de avaliação
Sobre a unidade
The Unit was formed in 1994 with a strong translational mission. It wishes to study heart failure from ‘The Bench to the Bedside’. It comprises five main groups of which four presented detailed overviews of their activity. Overall there was clear evidence of international quality of publications although the level varied across the individual groups.

Although its potential was recognised the Panel was concerned that the Unit Director, Prof Moreira, lacked the support of a strong scientific research coordinator. The Unit was an effective teaching facility, and its students were complimentary of the support offered. There was, however, clear evidence that the Unit was in-bred and many young clinical scientists were given autonomy at too early a stage in their development. Other than in one group, there was a relative absence of non-clinical scientists.
The obvious need is for a greater involvement of non-clinical scientists and an enhanced recruitment from outside Porto of strongly trained scientists (clinical and non-clinical). The Unit requires a senior appointment at Research Coordinator level to promote internal and external collaborations and the acquisition of additional grant support. There is considerable potential to take the Unit forward in both teaching and research. At the moment the Unit, in general, should be classified at the boundary between good and very good, but the Panel recognizes the potential of the Unit to be a Very Good Unit if it enhances its scientific base. Therefore the Overall score is Very Good although some groups score lower.

By a clear margin the Clinical Epidemiology and Public Health group was the strongest having a strong presence in international networks. It also has strong non-clinical researchers.

The weakest group was the group “Multidisciplinary approaches to cardiovascular diseases” which is only satisfactoryl.
