Comentários do painel de avaliação
Sobre a unidade
This Unit consists of three research groups that vary in PhD researchers from 4 (research group 317-2344) to 13 (research group 317-2272).
The main weakness of the unit is the publications record in peer-reviewed international research journals. All research groups fall below the threshold and this should be a matter for future concern.
Concerning the criteria of relevance and feasibility of their research projects and training of new researchers all research groups had a strong performance.
In summary, the Unit consists of groups with weak publication records in peer-reviewed international research journals.
The panel recommends that:
1. The members of all the research groups should redirect their dissemination activities towards publications in peer-reviewed international research journals (not only in Portuguese language).
2. More emphasis should be put in international networking activities.
3. Routines for the support of research students should be maintained within the Unit so as to keep the rate of degree completion at the present high rates.
4. Research students should be exposed (perhaps through training seminars or through assessment criteria for funding research proposals) to several methodological approaches, including quantitative methods.
Furthermore, the overall rating of 'good' is conditional upon an improvement in the performance of all the research groups concerning their publications in peer-reviewed international research journals.
Sobre os grupos de investigação
Artistic Studies [RG-EDU-Norte-Braga-317-2317]
This group has a clear focus in its educational research – artistic studies – and is rather special in that. The group is large enough for some mutual support but needs an international network if it is to be part of a larger and still specialized research community. It is reasonably successful in that. The group has not, however, given publications in international well-respected journals very high priority. In view of its high national level of activity, it would deserve being known through such publications. The very large number of master’s theses indicates that there is a large interest in research of the kind the group does, and the number of doctor’s theses is very good, too. The overall impression of the group is a potential for international influence that has not quite come into effect.
Curricula, teacher education and knowledge construction [RG-EDU-Norte-Braga-317-2344]
This group is a proposed new research group being formed out of one of the two subgroups of RG-EDU-Norte-Braga-317-2272. Its achievements are thus partly present in the self-report of that group. The ratings given pertain to the undivided group. In case separation actually takes place, the ratings of RG-EDU-Norte-Braga-317-2344 will be productivity 2, relevance 4, feasibility 3, training 5 (overall rating 3.2)
In spite of its commendable performance, the group has not given high priority to publications in well-respected international journals, which is a key criterion for productivity. In a way, this is balanced by high evaluations of relevance and feasibility. The group has certainly done work of great national importance. The training of new researchers is also very successful in relation to the number of researchers in the subgroup.
Development and Learning: Contexts and Processes [RG-EDU-Norte-Braga-317-2272]
This group can account for a high overall level of scientific activities with rather large funding and good productivity. The products reflect a broad spectrum of individual research interests, which nevertheless can be integrated into two different subgroups. Some of the achievements of this group in fact refer to one of the subgroups, which is proposed to form a research group of its own (RG-EDU-Norte-Braga-317-2344). The ratings given here concern the undivided group. In case separation actually takes place, the ratings of RG-EDU-Norte-Braga-317-2272 will be productivity 2, relevance 4, feasibility 3, training 4 (overall rating 3).

The training of new researchers is also very well taken care of.
