Sobre a unidade
Over the evaluation period the Unit has remained a manageable size (growing from four to seven PhDs). The structure of four groups is clear, and each is working in a defined area. Each group has made reasonable international contributions. There has been a clear effort to increase the infrastructure with a new, well equipped, state of the art laboratory at the point of patient care. The Unit is very well integrated with the hospital practice which is a large referral centre. It is clearly a good educational environment for the students. The links to the cardiovascular unit are a strength.
The Unit would benefit from more international cross-fertilisation. The Panel felt that the recent expansion (since the evaluation period) to add three more groups may not be helpful.

Overall this is a Unit that is on an upward trajectory and will provide a good basis for investing in translational research with impact, particularly if it keeps well focussed on the four groups that started in 2003.
Sobre os grupos de investigação
Assessment of neurohormonal activation in CKD: role of sympathetic, dopaminergic and natriuretic peptide systems [RG-HESC-Norte-Porto-725-414]
“Assessment of neurohormonal activation in CKD: role of sympathetic, dopaminergic and natriuretic peptide systems”. This is a niche area. The group is making a substantial contribution in good international journals in the field.
Body composition in CKD [RG-HESC-Norte-Porto-725-1514]
Genetics and pathology of hereditary nephropathies and investigation of factors involved in their progression [RG-HESC-Norte-Porto-725-417]
“Genetics and pathology of hereditary nephropathies and investigation of factors involved in their progression”. The group is an effective and full participant in the European Fabry network and has a valuable genetic registry.
Oral health in chronic kidney disease [RG-HESC-Norte-Porto-725-1743]
Pathophysiology of renal osteodystrophy. Evaluation of safety and efficacy of new compounds for the treatment of renal osteodystrophy: calcimimetic agents, new vitamin D analogs and new phosphate binders [RG-HESC-Norte-Porto-725-416]
“Pathophysiology of renal osteodystrophy. Evaluation of safety and efficacy of new compounds for the treatment of renal osteodystrophy: calcimimetic agents, new vitamin D analogs and new phosphate binders”. The group is clearly an effective participant in European trials and has a good clinical bone biopsy practice. The angiogenesis work in secondary hyperparathyroidism is novel and is now being accompanied by animal work to test the hypothesis that parathyroid hyperplasia can be modulated by antiangiogenic treatment.
Repercussion of systemic infectious diseases on renal function [RG-HESC-Norte-Porto-725-1182]
Studies of immunologic activity markers in cell cultures from fine needle aspiration biopsies from kidney transplant [RG-HESC-Norte-Porto-725-415]
“Studies of immunologic activity markers in cell cultures from fine needle aspiration biopsies from kidney transplant”. The group has an interesting line of research in fine needle aspiration of transplants. To some extent the approach is descriptive and may have limited potential to influence clinical practice.
