Sobre a unidade
This unit is primarily engaged in economics, management and development studies. If the emphasis is on activities is relevant for the region, recently, projects with a national scope have been undertaken, some of them in the framework of the European Union. Nevertheless, the international implication is globally weak in so far as networks and publications are concerned. While the centre’s existence and expertise are clearly related to the needs of the region, a fact appreciated by the panel, a more international comparative and experimental approach should not be neglected as this could benefit the region.
To define the overarching «philosophy» of the unit, CETRAD was presented as a «transdisciplinary» unit. But the panel was not entirely convinced by the added value of this qualification, especially when compared to more conventional and tried methodologies such as triangulation and the interaction between quantitative and qualitative analyses.
PhD students expressed satisfaction with their supervisors, the structuring of exchanges via regular seminars, the support received in writing papers for and attending (inter)national meetings.
Three groups compose this unit.
The work of the group «Innovation, organization and market» (4011–50) sounded potentially interesting but, at first, it was not particularly easy to judge what was being done. Finally it appears that the project is to study how to build a new «work culture», stimulating creativity and making room for an ever changing development. To realize this aim, it is planned to develop exchanges with different universities and researchers and to multiply field research. However until now there was little evidence of real integration in international scholarly activities. None the less the projects could prove effective.
To illustrate its research activity, the group «Globalization, state and politics» (4011–51) offered an example: female prostitution. The presentation was not very clear and the example was not quite convincing as to the methodology applied and the theory sustaining the research questions. Without such clear cut general perspective it is difficult to assess the whole portofolio of work despite its particular merits. But this situation could be due to the fact that this group is relatively new. The leader of the group said herself that they are «in a process of learning how to pass from questions of the stakeholders to scientific questions». Efforts are being made in this direction but there is still a long way to go.
The group «Society, territory and resources» (4011–52) works mainly in the field of agricultural economics and development This is a research line with clear competencies in regional economic analyses, which is also reflected in straightforward formulated research questions to be investigated. They are involved in relevant national and international networks. Given the nature of the research programme-regional economics-there is a focus on regional issues in the Douro Wine Region, which is also reflected in relative large contracts for locally applied research. Clear targets have been set for the productivity of the group. The publications from the past period are partly in Portuguese, partly in English peer reviewed journals. For the future it would be advised to develop also a more comparative view, which could also be beneficial for the publication in international journals.
