Sobre a unidade
The C-TAC unit consists of two research groups, one focused on sustainable construction and the other on transport resources, material and construction. Both scored good overall grades with sound performance in each of the four assessment categories. Both groups have critical mass.
The unit would arguably benefit from having more focused and explicit stated objectives. There is some suggestion that individuals are nor yet coming together enough to create shared research agendas for the groups.
Both groups have a reasonable level of publication in international research journals. Both have strong international visibility, manifested through international conference attendance and organisation and through engagement in research projects with partners drawn both from Europe and more widely across the world.
There is relatively little evidence of involvement on international committees, however, and of membership of editorial boards of international journals.
There is a genuinely international Advisory Board.
There are strong links with industrial and other non-academic partners which in turn is reflected in a strong performance in terms of numbers of contracts for work with such groups. The unit also has 5 patents recorded for the assessment period which is an noteworthy achievement. Nonetheless, its record of basic scientific research is also sound.
The number of PhD students graduated is relatively low for a unit of this size, but the students do benefit from a range of inputs from international professors and were broadly content with the support they were receiving.
