Sobre a unidade
This could be seen as a relevant clinical respiratory group within Portugal. Its leaders are well recognised within their areas of speciality. They are contributing to European respiratory networks and performing studies in important areas of respiratory medicine including lung cancer, allergy and asthma, lung infectious diseases, occupational medicine and interstitial lung disease. The written report lists more than 30 groups displaying a strong tendency for dispersion; with such a wide range of groups it is difficult to achieve the depth necessary to make significant scientific contributions. Of these large numbers of groups nine presented their studies at the site visit. These showed some evidence of internationally recognised achievements, but there was little evidence of coordination of the different research programmes. The overall score was between poor and good but with isolated higher productivity (eg. Celso Pereira, F Regateiro) and some young staff leading promising projects (eg. Antonio Ferreira and Henriqueta Breda).

Education – there was little sense of urgency in established staff finishing their PhDs. There were few young PhD students giving a sense of lack of new blood. Further, no evidence of collaborative research training with external (Portuguese and overseas) institutions. There was also no clear monitoring structure.
It is difficult to see these groups forming a strong Unit without making a considerable effort to reduce the dispersion of themes and to concentrate on clear research topics with potential impact. The individuals named above should be encouraged to develop initiatives in order to reshape a new and more viable proposal.

Comentários da unidade

We found this classification really unfair, in face of:
- The changes and new dynamic recently introduced, not only in the number of PhDs but also in the division in two main research groups, related with the perspectives in the ongoing research in respiratory diseases
- The multidisciplinarity of the Unit, with research projects including several other Units from the same Medical School, from other Schools in Coimbra University and from other Portuguese Universities
- The international links of the Unit, not only through the European Networks (Ga2len and Smoke-Free Hospital) but also through the new signed Protocols (with the Universities of Maastricht, Parma and Ghent) promoting partnerships in science and mobility of young researchers
- The international individual positions of several investigators of the Unit - e.g. the Unit Coordinator being Chair of a Scientific group in the European Respiratory Society (ERS Group 1.5) and also external reviewer of ATS/ERS Task Force on Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis and ERS Task Force on Lymphangiomiomatosis
- The most recent achievements obtained

In conclusion, we think that theses changes and other issues introduced since the beginning of the new Coordination in mid 2006 (positively stressed by the panel during the site visit) would benefit from another kind of support.
