Comentários do painel de avaliação
Sobre a unidade
This Unit appears rather special for four reasons:
a. it consists of just two research groups,
b. both groups are extremely large - in terms of groups conducting research in education. Specifically group 4016-225 has 41 PhD researchers and group 4016-226 has 30 PhD researchers,
c. it does not operate within a university,
d. both groups operate and perform in a uniform way and thus their evaluation is rather similar.
The main characteristic of the performance of this Unit is their extensive list of papers published in peer-reviewed international research journals. These papers however are not directly relevant to either educational research or the designation of the groups. On top of this, and despite the large number of researchers listed as belonging to the research groups, the international papers are mainly the result of the work of one person resulting in an overall poor performance. With regard to the criteria of relevance and feasibility of research projects, both groups are rather good. Finally, concerning the training of new researchers both groups have an excellent record of training.
In summary, the Unit has two groups, operating and performing in a relatively uniform way, the main characteristics of which are:
a. number of papers published in peer-reviewed international research journals which bear no direct relation to education and
b. an excellent record concerning the training of new researchers.
The panel recommends that:
1. Peer-reviewed international research journals should continue to be the focus for publications. However the groups should try and develop research more relevant to education or come under a different categorisation with FCT funding. Given their research orientations and the background of the researchers belonging to these groups the panel suggests that the groups should develop close links with similarly orientated groups at the University of Aveiro, which is both geographically and thematically close. Specifically, we suggest the development of links between the two groups of this Unit and group 194-1797 of the University of Aveiro.
2. Research should include all members of the groups.
3. International networking activities should be integrated in the functioning of the whole group so as all members of the group is able to benefit.
The rating 'good' given to this Unit is conditional to the re-orientation of their research efforts and the development of links with groups doing educational research.
Sobre os grupos de investigação
Educação, Saúde e Desenvolvimento Social [RG-EDU-Centro-Viseu-4016-225]
Their record of training of new reserchers is very good. Additionally, they are very active both nationally and internationally and they have quite a number of international publications which given the nature of their institution (Instituto Politecnico) is a very positive aspect. However, there are serious limitations concerning their research performance: a.The majority of their publications have no direct relevance to the designation of the group (and to education) and b. The majority of their publications is the result of the work of one researcher only. In all, it is an unusual but interesting group.
Engenharias, Tecnologias e Gestão [RG-EDU-Centro-Viseu-4016-226]
As with the other group of this research Unit, their record of training of new reserchers is very good. Additionally, they are very active both nationally and internationally and they have quite a number of international publications which given the nature of their institution (Instituto Politecnico) is a very positive aspect. In case of this group the serious limitations concern the nature of their publications: The majority of them have no direct relevance to the designation of the group and to education. Again, the same remark as with the other group of this research Unit: it is an unusual but interesting group.
