Whose responsibility is it to pay for the Seguro Social Voluntário and the Personal Accident Insurance of the grant recipients?

The Research Grant Holder Statute foresees a social security scheme for grant recipients – the Voluntary Social Insurance. The Social Security admission procedures are the same for all types of beneficiaries.

It is the grant recipient’s responsibility to register, he/she is however entitled to be reimbursed by the funding institution for the contributions corresponding to the 1st scale of earnings mentioned in Article 36 of Decree-Law 40/90, of 1 February.

The same Statute also stipulates a personal accident insurance. The institution awarding the grants is obliged to take out a personal accident insurance for the activities of each grant recipient. It may be advantageous to take out a collective insurance.
