ERC funds FRONTIERS project with Portuguese participation
The FRONTIERS project, a candidate for Call first Call the Science Journalism Initiative and proposed by a consortium of four international partners, including NOVA University Lisbon, has been selected for funding in the amount of €1.5 million by the European Research Council (ERC).
The FRONTIERS project will support science journalists' stays at research institutions across Europe between 2023 and 2027, for periods of 3 to 5 months. The consortium that will manage the project and promote these mobility actions includes, in addition to NOVA University Lisbon, Pompeu Fabra University (Spain), the Centre for Ethics in Science and Science Journalism (Italy), and Enspire Science (Israel), which coordinates the project. The mentors for this project's application on the Portuguese side are Ana Sanchez (ITQB NOVA) and António Granado (NOVA FCSH/ICNOVA).
The Science Journalism Initiative is a program created by the ERC with the aim of promoting journalistic independence and coverage of cutting-edge research in all areas of knowledge. It will provide training on science journalism, while also promoting mutual learning between journalists and researchers. The project also aims to develop a sustainable collaborative model with a long-term vision.
In addition to its main objective of supporting independent science journalism, the ERC hopes that this funding program will contribute to public trust in science, combat misinformation, and improve social resilience against misinformation. R&D institutions in all areas of knowledge will be eligible to participate in this program.
