The AIR Centre – Atlantic International Research Centre is an international collaborative network dedicated to promoting science, technology and innovation for the sustainable development of the Atlantic Ocean , for the benefit of the societies that share this geostrategic space.

Created on the initiative of the Portuguese Government, in close collaboration with international partners, the AIR Centre is based in the Azores and operates as a platform for transnational cooperation involving countries from Europe, Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean and North America. Its mission focuses on integrated observation of the Atlantic and the use of scientific data to address global challenges such as climate change, the protection of marine ecosystems, food and energy security, and the sustainable development of blue economies.

The AIR Center's main areas of activity include:

  • Observation and monitoring of the ocean and atmosphere
  • Data management and artificial intelligence applied to Atlantic sciences
  • Space technologies and observation infrastructure
  • Blue economy and sustainable innovation
  • International scientific cooperation and science diplomacy

The FCT is represented in the governance of the AIR Centre, supporting the articulation with the National Scientific and Technological System, as well as the country's insertion in global research and innovation networks.

The AIR Centre stands as an example of multilateral scientific diplomacy, promoting knowledge sharing, strengthening scientific and technological capabilities and cohesion between Atlantic countries and communities.
