O AIR Center - Atlantic International Research Centre is an international collaborative network dedicated to promoting science, technology and innovation for the sustainable development of the Atlantic Ocean, for the benefit of the societies that share this geostrategic space.
Created at the initiative of the Portuguese government, in close coordination with international partners, the AIR Centre is based in the Azores and functions as a platform for transnational cooperation, involving countries from Europe, Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean and North America. Its mission focuses on integrated observation of the Atlantic and the use of scientific data to tackle global challenges such as climate change, the protection of marine ecosystems, food and energy security and the sustainable development of blue economies.
The AIR Center's main areas of activity include:
- Observation and monitoring of the ocean and atmosphere
- Data management and artificial intelligence applied to Atlantic sciences
- Space technologies and observation infrastructures
- Blue economy and sustainable innovation
- International scientific cooperation and science diplomacy
The FCT is represented in the governance of the AIR Center, supporting the articulation with the National Scientific and Technological System, as well as the insertion of the country in global research and innovation networks.
The AIR Centre is an example of multilateral science diplomacy, promoting the sharing of knowledge, the strengthening of scientific and technological capacities and cohesion between Atlantic countries and communities.
