INL – International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory

The INL – International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory is an international scientific and technological research organization based in Braga, Portugal. Created under an agreement between the Governments of Portugal and Spain, the INL is the first and only intergovernmental laboratory in the world entirely dedicated to research and development in nanoscience and nanotechnology.

Since its inauguration in 2009, INL's mission has been to promote scientific excellence and technological innovation with a direct impact on society through international and interdisciplinary collaboration. The laboratory operates in strategic areas such as:

  • Nanoelectronics and Device Engineering
  • Nanomedicine
  • Advanced Materials
  • Food Security and Nutrition
  • Energy and Sustainability
  • Quantum Information Technologies

With world-class research infrastructure and a highly qualified scientific community, INL welcomes researchers, engineers, and technicians from various countries, promoting a culture of cooperation between academia, industry, and policy makers.

FCT represents Portugal on the INL Council, supporting the laboratory's integration into the National Scientific and Technological System and promoting synergies with other research institutions, technology centers, and companies.

The INL plays a key role in consolidating the European Research Area and promoting science produced in the Iberian Peninsula internationally, serving as an example of successful cross-border cooperation.
