2nd Edition of Call Maria de Sousa PhD Studentships Call

The FCT, in collaboration with the AICIB (Agency for Clinical Research and Biomedical Innovation), announces today, April 14, the 2nd edition of Call Maria de Sousa PhD Studentships Call , marking two years since the passing of this distinguished Portuguese researcher. The Call award 50 Studentships in the field of epidemiology and virology, and applications will be open from September 1 to 29, 2022.

The aim of Call to encourage the acquisition of new knowledge that will enable the creation of skills to respond to virological phenomena, including pandemics, and that will translate into effective prevention measures, better healthcare, and effective support for citizens.

Applications will be considered in any scientific field, with projects that contribute to the following objectives and areas of knowledge:

  1. Epidemiology and risk factors for infection and severe disease caused by viruses;
  2. Human-animal interaction, mechanisms of resistance and interspecies transmission of viruses, and risk of pandemics;
  3. Prevention and preparedness strategies for new epidemics of viral origin, including vaccines;
  4. Innovative approaches, including new methods and new technologies, for the diagnosis of viral diseases;
  5. Characterization of viral infection mechanisms;
  6. Characterization of the host's cellular and serological immune response to viral infection, impact of age and comorbidities;
  7. Development of new therapies and new therapeutic approaches, including life support equipment and personal protective equipment for combating viral diseases;
  8. Repercussions of viral infection on maternal health and newborns;
  9. Psychological impact and behavioral changes associated with epidemics or pandemics of virological origin.
