25 years of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education

The current Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education (MCTES) is celebrating 25 years of existence and the event has been marked by several initiatives aimed at the general public, such as debates, concerts, exhibitions and the publication of several books. The program also includes the recent launch of the “Science & Knowledge Collection”, in partnership with the newspaper Público and the publisher A Bela e o Monstro.

The “Science & Knowledge Collection” reissues the first editions of eight relevant works for the promotion of scientific culture, curated by the bookseller and anthropologist, Luís Gomes, and with a preface by professor and researcher Fernando Carvalho Rodrigues. In a more in-depth way, the reader is introduced to the works of Charles Darwin, Pedro Nunes, Erwin Schrödinger, Antero de Quental, Garcia de Orta, Almeida Garrett, Jules Verne and Mário António da Cunha Moura. The works are being published in detachable format in the Thursday editions of the Público newspaper, between September 17th and November 5th.

It is worth remembering that MCTES was created in 1995, at the time called the Ministry of Science and Technology and led by José Mariano Gago, with the main objective of promoting the development of scientific and research work in the country. Since its creation in 1997, the FCT has been supervised by this ministry.
