The Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education (MCTES), in collaboration with the Ciência Viva Agency, is promoting a conference entitled “On the Future of Science in Portugal, 30 years after the May Days of 1987” at the Picoas Forum on May 11th.

The initiative, which will be attended by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the Prime Minister, António Costa, the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Manuel Heitor, and also the President of the Parliamentary Committee for Education and Science, Alexandre Quintanilha, aims to be an event for reflection on the main challenges and opportunities for the future of science in Portugal.

The conference will mark 30 years since the National Scientific and Technological Research Days, which took place at the Picoas Forum from 11 to 15 May 1987, and which led to the formulation of the first Science and Technology Mobilization Programme for Portugal.

The event will be followed by the celebrations of “National Scientists’ Day”, which will take place with a meeting on May 16th, at the Rivoli Theatre, in Porto, as part of the “Paths of Knowledge” conference series.
