February 5 | Safer Internet Day 2019

Around 140 countries will mark Safer Internet Day on February 5. In Portugal, the celebrations are promoted by the Safe Internet Consortium with an event whose central theme is online human rights and the new challenges of creating content on the Internet. The event, which is open to the public, will take place at the University of Madeira Rectory between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

The initiative features contributions from Sabrina Vorbau, coordinator of the European SELMA (Social and Emotional Learning for Mutual Awareness) project, which aims to eliminate hate speech in the digital environment; Matia Losego, trainer and online human rights activist; and online content creators such as rapper Malabá, YouTuber SKILO, and the actors from the play "ID, Your Mark on the NET 2.0."

During the afternoon, the celebrations continue with activities aimed at younger audiences at the Dr. Horácio Bento de Gouveia Primary School in Madeira. The school will host a performance of the play “ID, A tua Marca na NET 2.0” (ID, Your Mark on the NET 2.0), staged by actors Pedro Górgia, Alexandre da Silva, and Tiago Aldeia.

Also as part of Safer Internet Day 2019, February 14 will see the launch of the series “Zig Zaga na Net” (Zig Zag on the Net), a 30-episode audio project on digital citizenship that will be broadcast on ZigZag Online Radio. This is a new tool produced by the FCT's Safe Internet Center in partnership with the SeguraNet Center of the DGE — Directorate-General for Education of the Ministry of Education, in the context of its activities for the prevention of responsible internet use.

The celebrations are promoted by the Safe Internet Consortium, coordinated by FCT and comprising APAV – Portuguese Association for Victim Support, DGE – Directorate-General for Education of the Ministry of Education, IPDJ – Portuguese Institute for Sport and Youth, Fundação PT, and Microsoft Portugal.
