Biodiversa+ launches Call for Research Projects 2021-2022
Biodiversa+, the European partnership for biodiversity, has opened the Call for joint research projects 2021-2022, under the theme "Supporting the protection of biodiversity and ecosystems across land and sea." The Call pre-proposals is open until November 30 (3:00 p.m. CET), and full proposals may be submitted until April 14, 2022 (3:00 p.m. CET).
There are three themes in Call by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT):
(1) Knowledge to identify priority areas for conservation, establish effective and resilient ecological networks, improve species-based protection, and preserve genetic diversity;
(2) Multiple benefits and costs of biodiversity and ecosystem protection: synergies and trade-offs;
(3) Effective management and equitable governance to deliver bolder conservation outcomes.
This Call a budget allocation of €400,000 from the FCT, with a maximum of €80,000 to be awarded to a consortium with Portuguese participation and €120,000 to a consortium coordinated by Portugal.
BiodivERsA is a pan-European network of national and regional funding organizations that has been promoting research on biodiversity, ecosystem services, and nature-based solutions since 2008. The European Commission, through its Environment and Research and Innovation departments, co-designed Biodiversa+, a co-funded European Partnership for Biodiversity, which is part of the new actions included in the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030.
FCT is a member of Biodiversa+ “Rescuing Biodiversity to Safeguard Life on Earth” and participates in the European Biodiversity Strategy for 2030, which brings together 76 funding organizations and environmental policy actors from 39 European and associated countries to work on its five main objectives: (1) Planning and supporting research and innovation in biodiversity through a shared strategy, joint Calls for research projects, and capacity-building activities; (2) Establishing a network of harmonized schemes to improve the monitoring of biodiversity and ecosystem services across Europe; (3) Contribute to cutting-edge knowledge for the deployment of nature-based solutions and the valorization of biodiversity in the private sector; (4) Ensure efficient scientific support for policy formulation and implementation in Europe; (5) Strengthen the relevance and impact of pan-European biodiversity research in a global context.
