FCT Studentships Call received 3,130 applications

The application period for Call Studentships for Doctoral Studies 2022 ended on April 7, 2022. The Call to award 1,450 Studentships received a total of 3,130 applications, of which 2,107 were submitted on the last day of the application period. The FCT expects the provisional results of Call to Call announced at the end of July.

The average age of applicants for this Call 30, with women representing 56% of the total number of applications. In terms of the type of Studentship, 83% of applicants intend to pursue their doctorate at national institutions, 15% in a mixed regime (Portugal and abroad), and only 2% entirely abroad.

Foreign applicants represent 32%, 2% more than in Call , and come from a total of 77 countries, compared to 71 last year. The countries with the most Call applicants Call Brazil (47%), Italy (8%), Iran (7%), and Spain (4%).

The scientific areas with the highest representation in applications are Engineering and Technology Sciences (24.1%), Social Sciences (23.2%), and Humanities (16.7%).

This year, for the first time, the Call a specific line for Studentships whose work plans are carried out wholly or partly in non-academic entities, namely in companies, collaborative laboratories, technology and innovation centers, technology interface centers, public administration entities, or third sector entities. There were 130 applications for this line, representing 4.2% of the total applications received.

FCT Doctoral Studentships are competitively awarded grants to support advanced training in all areas of knowledge for the purpose of obtaining a doctoral degree. These Studentships doctoral students to devote themselves exclusively to their research, thereby contributing to the scientific and technological development of the country. Currently, the FCT has more than 7,000 Studentships in progress. In 2021, 2,800 new Studentships were initiated.

FCT support in the area of advanced training corresponds to an annual investment of around €100 million. In addition to this funding, there is the payment of tuition fees directly to higher education institutions and personal accident insurance for scholarship holders, which together represent around €16.5 million.
