European Researchers' Night in over 250 cities across Europe

(English version not available)

More than 250 cities across Europe will celebrate science at the “European Researchers’ Night” on 30 September. Thousands of actions and activities are being organized, with the aim of showing in an interactive, educational and fun way what researchers actually do for society. Portugal also joins in this celebration, with numerous activities from North to South. The initiative is promoted every year by the European Commission, within the scope of the Marie Curie Actions.

The “European Researchers’ Night” is an opportunity to showcase the high-quality and innovative work developed by Portuguese researchers and research centers to civil society. The European Commission's proposal is to provide any citizen with the experience of being a scientist for a day.

Lisbon, Porto, Braga, Santarém, Aveiro, Bragança, Coimbra, Évora, Faro, Setúbal, Madeira, Castelo Branco and the Azores are some of the regions that already have the programme of activities that will be carried out at the “European Researchers' Night” available. In total, 18 locations will offer free activities for people of all ages and backgrounds. On the interactive map, you can search for activities taking place near you.

The different programs offer multiple activities in the most diverse areas of knowledge. It will be possible to train microsurgeries with 3D models, perform scientific experiments, observe microorganisms under a microscope, print objects in 3D or interact with robots.

There are three consortia that ensure the “European Researchers’ Night” project in Portugal. The FORESIGHT consortium – Foreseeing Opportunities, Risks, Environmental and Security Issues for the next Generation: Highlighting Trends for 2030 will have initiatives from north to south of the country, with the support of the National Network of Ciência Viva Centers on the ground. SCILIFE – Science in everyday life divides its programming between the regions of Lisbon, Porto and Minho. And Ciência à Moda do Norte organizes a specific program in Porto, distributed between the Pavilhão Rosa Mota and the Almeida Garrett Municipal Library.
