(Versão em inglês não disponível)
More than 250 cities across Europe will celebrate science on European Researchers' Night on September 30. Thousands of events and activities are being organized with the aim of showing, in an interactive, educational, and entertaining way, what researchers actually do for society. Portugal is also joining in this celebration, with numerous activities from north to south. The initiative is promoted every year by the European Commission as part of the Marie Curie Actions.
The European Researchers' Night is an opportunity to showcase the high-quality, innovative work carried out by Portuguese researchers and research centers to civil society. The European Commission's proposal is to give any citizen the chance to experience being a scientist for a day.
Lisbon, Porto, Braga, Santarém, Aveiro, Bragança, Coimbra, Évora, Faro, Setúbal, Madeira, Castelo Branco, and the Azores are some of the regions that already have the program of activities available for the European Researchers' Night. In total, 18 locations will offer free activities for people of all ages and backgrounds. On the interactive map, you can search for activities taking place near you.
The various programs offer multiple activities in a wide range of areas of knowledge. It will be possible to practice microsurgery with 3D models, conduct scientific experiments, observe microorganisms under a microscope, print 3D objects, or interact with robots.
There are three consortia responsible for the European Researchers' Night project in Portugal. The FORESIGHT consortium – Foreseeing Opportunities, Risks, Environmental and Security Issues for the next Generation: Highlighting Trends for 2030 – will be running initiatives across the country, with the support of the National Network of Ciência Viva Centers on the ground. SCILIFE – Science in everyday life divides its program between the regions of Lisbon, Porto, and Minho. And Ciência à Moda do Norte organizes a specific program in Porto, distributed between the Rosa Mota Pavilion and the Almeida Garrett Municipal Library.
