FCT awards 963 Studentships in the 2018 Call

The Foundation for Science and Technology has announced the final results of Call 2018 Call Studentships . A total of 963 Studentships were awarded across more than 50 degree-awarding institutions, corresponding to a success rate of 38% of all applicants. In 2018, the FCT awarded more than 1,530 Studentships between this Call the doctoral programs—an increase of approximately 14% over 2017.

The FCT will now formalize the Studentships, and the first payments will begin in December. Scholarship recipients will participate in Doctoral Programs at Portuguese or foreign universities, with start dates between September 1, 2018, and August 31, 2019. Students who have already started their work plan will receive their Studentships retroactive payments.

The applications were reviewed by 36 scientific panels, using three evaluation criteria: i) the candidate's absolute merit; ii) the merit of the work plan; and iii) the merit of the hosting conditions. Analysis of the results now released shows that:

· 78% of Studentships relate to work plans carried out entirely in Portugal;

· 18% refer to Studentships , with work plans to be carried out partially abroad; and

· 4% refer to work plans carried out entirely abroad.

The distribution of candidates by gender is 56% women and 44% men. Of the selected candidates, 91% are Portuguese nationals. Studentships were awarded Studentships candidates from 22 countries, including Portugal. Among foreign candidates, the largest number are from Brazil, followed by Italy and Spain.

The next Call Studentships will be announced at the end of 2018. As with the last two Calls, the application period will run during the first quarter of 2019, so that the results will be available by summer 2019.
