FCT launches Arquivo.pt awards

FCT is launching the first edition of the Arquivo.pt Awards, a Call created to promote the use of Arquivo.pt's old site preservation service and to encourage and recognize research and discovery of useful applications of the Portuguese web archive for society.

To enter, participants must submit a text and a short video describing their work by May 4. Individual or group work on any topic can be submitted. The 1st prize is worth 10,000 euros, the 2nd prize 3,000 euros and the 3rd prize 2,000 euros.

The Call will reward original and innovative work that demonstrates the usefulness of the Arquivo.pt service and the importance of preserving and using information published on the web. The works must have Arquivo.pt as the main source of information and be practical applications or complete research studies, based on web information available in the archive.

Millions of pages are published on the web every day. After a short time, the vast majority of this information is no longer available and is irretrievably lost. Arquivo.pt is a research infrastructure managed by the FCT that allows archived web pages to be searched and accessed. The main objective is to preserve information published on the web for memory, study and research purposes.

There are several examples of possible uses for the content preserved in this infrastructure. In 2017, as part of its 20th anniversary celebrations, the FCT presented the Time Tunnela journey into the Foundation's digital past, using the history preserved on Arquivo.pt. Recently, TSF also used Arquivo.pt to commemorate its 30th anniversary with an infographic that invites you on a journey through the site Radiowhere you can follow its evolution and review key moments in Portugal and the world.

More information about the Call is available on the FCT website and at Arquivo.pt
