Researcher from the University of Aveiro becomes the first Portuguese national to be appointed to the European Academy of Sciences

João Rocha, Director of the Center for Research in Ceramic Materials and Composites (CICECO) at the University of Aveiro, became this month the first Portuguese scientist to be invited to join the European Academy of Sciences (EURASC), an independent organization that brings together some of the most renowned European academics and engineers or those residing in Europe.

Unanimously approved by the General Council of this academy, the Portuguese chemist joins a group of scientists who carry out cutting-edge research and technological development, united by a commitment to promoting science and technology and the crucial roles they play in the economic and social development of modern societies.

"This appointment recognizes almost 25 years of work in the field of science by the working group, which I am proud to coordinate," said the researcher and university professor in a statement to the University of Aveiro.

João Rocha has published over 430 scientific articles with more than 10,000 citations. He is Director of Associate Laboratory Research Associate Laboratory for Ceramic and Composite Materials, supported by FCT, evaluator for the European Research Council (ERC), and a member of the National Council for Science and Technology and the Lisbon Academy of Sciences. In 2004, he was awarded the FCT Prize for Scientific Excellence.
