University of Aveiro researcher becomes first Portuguese appointed to the European Academy of Sciences
João Rocha, Director of the Centre for Research in Ceramic Materials and Composites (CICECO) at the University of Aveiro, this month became the first Portuguese scientist to be invited to join the European Academy of Sciences (EURASC), an independent organization that brings together some of the most renowned European or European-resident academics and engineers.
Unanimously approved by the academy's General Council, the Portuguese chemist joins a group of scientists who carry out cutting-edge research and technological development, united by their commitment to promoting science and technology and the crucial roles they play in the economic and social development of modern societies.
"This appointment recognizes almost 25 years of work on behalf of science by the working group, which I am proud to coordinate," said the researcher and university professor in a statement to the University of Aveiro.
João Rocha has published more than 430 scientific articles with more than 10,000 citations. He is Director of the Associate Laboratory Centro de Investigação em Materiais Cerâmicos e Comósitos, supported by FCT, an evaluator for the European Research Council (ERC), a member of the National Council for Science and Technology and a member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences. In 2004 he was awarded the FCT Prize for Scientific Excellence).
