NewSpace Atlantic Summit 2018
On May 28 and 29, the Pavilhão do Conhecimento (Pavilion of Knowledge) in Lisbon will host the first NewSpace Atlantic Summit. The event is organized by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) in collaboration with the Agência Ciência Viva para a Cultura Científica e Tecnológica (Science Alive Agency for Scientific and Technological Culture) and the Space Frontier Foundation. The opening session will be attended by the Minister of Science, Technology, and Higher Education, Manuel Heitor, the Regional Secretary for the Sea, Science, and Technology of the Azores, Gui Menezes, and international experts in the field of space such as Jean Jacques Dordain, former director of the European Space Agency (ESA) and Special Advisor to the Minister, and Pacôme Revillon, CEO of Euroconsult. Other sessions will feature Athiye Jawad, executive at Planet, Candace Johnson, President of the European Trade Association for Business Angels, Sarah Cruddas, journalist and producer specializing in space, and Laura Berneri, Director of Communications at Thales Alenia Space.
NewSpace in the Atlantic sets the tone for the conference, which has the recent national space strategy, "Portugal Space 2030," and the proposed Space Law, currently under public discussion, as some of its main focuses. Space infrastructure and Earth observation will be discussed, with a focus on the implementation of the Atlantic International Research Center, launch services, and scientific dissemination, education, and communication in the sector. This is a unique opportunity to drive a new generation of services, along with Earth observation applications, small satellites, and space constellations.
It also aims to raise awareness of processes and products that enhance the exploitation of space data and signals through space services and applications, as well as the development, construction, and operation of infrastructure and services that generate space data in the Atlantic regions. The main objective of the event is to promote new markets and skilled jobs in various areas of the economy that may arise with the space sector, but also to deepen the debate on mini, micro, and nanosatellites with an emphasis on the Atlantic regions.
The NewSpace Atlantic Summit also seeks to stimulate the opening of new areas of intervention ranging from agriculture to fishing, including infrastructure monitoring and even urban development, defense, and security, as well as the growth of NewSpace entrepreneurship.
The event program also includes several networking opportunities between sessions to facilitate the exchange of ideas and experiences among participants.
