The FCT announced today (November 27) the results of the Call Stimulate Scientific Employment - Individual 2018 (CEEC Individual) to applicants. This Call awarded 300 work contracts to PhD researchers, in all scientific areas and in four contract categories: 158 Junior Researcher contracts, 104 Assistant Researcher contracts, 37 Principal Researcher contracts and 1 Coordinating Researcher contract. The breakdown by major scientific area shows 97 contracts in Natural Sciences, 57 in Engineering and Technology, 51 in Humanities and Arts, 43 in Social Sciences, 33 in Medical and Health Sciences and 19 in Agricultural and Veterinary Sciences.

The candidates were selected through an evaluation and ranking process carried out by 25 international panels, coordinated by José Carlos Marques dos Santos. The distribution of contracts by category and by scientific panel is proportional to the respective number of candidates evaluated.

Of the 300 researchers selected, 51% are women. Portugal's attractiveness on the international science scene has grown, with researchers of foreign nationality accounting for 32% of all candidates selected for contracts, compared to 25% in the previous Call The main origins of the foreign researchers selected are Spain (23 researchers), Italy (18), France (10) and Germany (9).

After the results have been announced, the prior hearing period begins, during which unsuccessful candidates can challenge their assessment. Employment contracts must be signed between the researchers and the host institutions within 90 days of the signing of the program contracts between the latter and the FCT.

The CEEC Individual is one of the instruments for funding the hiring of researchers defined by the Scientific Employment Regulation, launched in 2017 by the FCT following the publication of Decree-Law no. 57/2016. The next edition of the Call will run until the end of this year, as provided for in Decree-Law no. 60/2018 and disclosed in the FCT Calls calendar for 2019.
