Archive, Documentation and Information

The Archive, Documentation and Information Service (ADI) is part of the Division of Support to the Directive Council. It is responsible for the management, development and implementation of resources and mechanisms for document and archive management - which includes the Expedient Service - and the operation of the Science and Technology Archive, namely in terms of the management, inventorying, preservation and availability of the documentary and bibliographic heritage of the Foundation for Science and Technology. It is also responsible for the management of three services related to the management of access to scientific information, namely scientific journals, directories and repositories.

The ACT has as its mission the treatment, preservation and dissemination of the archival heritage in the custody of the FCT, and others with scientific and historical interest, thus contributing to the preservation of the history and memory of science and technology in Portugal. It reserves and manages documentation of undeniable interest and historical quality, which reflects Portuguese cultural and scientific activity, essentially from the second half of the 20th century onwards, largely translated into thousands of support files to Studentships, institutions, research projects, among others. A documentary collection representative of the history of institutions, scientific policies and the organization of science, with interest for all areas of knowledge. Due to the activity that the FCT develops and the responsibility it has in ensuring the preservation of scientific documentary heritage, the archive has also been integrating some personal collections of recognized personalities linked to scientific activity.

The FCT Library gathers and makes available an important set of information resources that includes monographs and periodicals, national and international, specialized in management and policies of science and technology, institutional history, and also in disciplines such as the history of science and technology. In addition to the collection held by the FCT itself, it includes editions from the now extinct INIC and JNICT, as well as collections from personal collections.

The creation of INDEXAR results from the need for a platform capable of identifying and providing an online reference of access to repositories and digital scientific journals in the area of science and culture, in an integrated manner. A Directory that allows the search and identification of information in a complete and credible way and that enhances the visibility and dissemination of registered information.

FCT is the National SciELO Unit, assuming responsibility for the coordination and operation of SciELO Portugal, a service that makes available information from different scientific fields, with the objective of promoting the Portuguese scientific journals and disseminating worldwide the national scientific production of quality.

FCT is, since 1999, the Portuguese institution that coordinates the management of national participation in Latindex, a network for the dissemination of scientific publications. The goal is to disseminate, make accessible and raise the quality of scientific research journals, technical-professional and scientific and cultural dissemination edited in Latin American countries, the Caribbean, Spain and Portugal.
