First edition of the new FCT-Tenure opens with 1,000 vacancies for career positions

Applications are now open for the first edition of FCT-Tenure, the new FCT funding instrument for stabilizing researchers in career positions, which will be held every two years, with two editions already planned. The first edition of FCT-Tenure will co-finance the hiring of up to 1,000 PhD researchers, exclusively for permanent positions, with an additional 400 positions expected to open in the 2025 edition.

Institutions belonging to the National Science and Technology System (SNCT) are eligible to submit applications for co-financing of positions associated with new Calls career positions. It will then be up to the beneficiary institutions, through Calls and in accordance with the scientific and innovation strategy submitted for evaluation, to select and recruit PhD graduates.

The program will allow PhD researchers to integrate into both research and teaching careers, with a limit of 4 hours per week dedicated to teaching in each career while the support is in effect, thus viewing both careers through the lens of the scientific research activities they have in common.

With the aim of promoting synergies between FCT-Tenure and other sources of funding and society, this Program introduces two new models for the stabilization of researchers: the "Research Unit/Associate Laboratory (UI/LA)" Chairs and the "Non-Academic (NA)" Chairs, with the aim of promoting co-financing and the sharing and alignment of strategies between national institutions. Associate Laboratory UI/LA)" Chairs and "Non-Academic (NA)" Chairs, with the aim of promoting co-financing and the sharing and alignment of strategies between national institutions.

FCT-Tenure is a key instrument in stabilizing the professional lives of researchers and their lines of research, as well as in creating a more attractive and sustainable career path for researchers in the early stages of their careers. Applications close at 5:00 p.m. on March 1, 2024 (Mainland Portugal time).
