The 6th edition of the Mário Ruivo Award challenges young people to explore maritime professions through film
The 6th edition of the Mário Ruivo – Gerações Oceânicas Award is now underway, inviting young people from across the country to discover and raise awareness of the many professions related to the ocean. Under the theme “The Ocean and Maritime Professions, ” the initiative recognizes audiovisual works that highlight areas of activity related to the sea, while simultaneously promoting ocean literacy and interest in maritime careers.
Open to participants aged 14 to 21, the contest invites the creation of short films up to seven minutes in length, encouraging creativity and exploration of professions such as scientific divers, marine renewable energy engineers, marine biologists, maritime law specialists, ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) pilots, blue biotechnology researchers, and underwater archaeologists, among others.
The competition is divided into four categories, with a prize of 2,000 euros awarded in each category. Applications will be accepted through September 30 via the contest’s official website.
Under the slogan “Your future lies at sea. Tell us how,” the initiative aims to inspire young people to explore career opportunities that are still relatively unknown, while strengthening the connection between education, science, and the sea.
Organized as a tribute to the legacy of Professor Mário Ruivo, a leading figure in marine science and policy in Portugal, the Mário Ruivo – Ocean Generations Award seeks to highlight the role of the ocean in contemporary society and give a voice to the younger generations, who will play a decisive role in its future.
This award is a joint initiative of several organizations, including the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), the Directorate-General for Maritime Policy (DGPM), the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA), the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA), the Portuguese Film Archive, EMEPC, and EduQA, and also receives institutional support from various public and private partners.
