88% of FCT scholarship recipients successfully obtain their doctoral degree
The FCT published an international article in F1000Research —an open space for publishing research articles—which is the result of a study conducted on the professional trajectories of individuals who benefited from an FCT Studentship .
Entitled“Obtaining a Ph.D. in Portugal. Determinants of Success and Subsequent Career Paths,"the article was written by Ana Ramos and Daniel Ferreira (who are part of the FCT's Studies and Planning Division) and aims to disseminate the results of this study more widely, allowing researchers engaged in similar studies in other contexts to learn about the situation in Portugal. Published in the "Research on Research, Policy, and Culture"section of F1000Research, the article also contributes to the body of evidence on doctoral training and the professional paths of doctoral graduates at the international level.
This study analyzed the career paths of 5,800 former doctoral fellows, concluding that 88% of these fellows successfully completed their course. This is a high figure, comparable to that of other European Union countries, with the success rate being slightly higher among women and younger fellows at the start of the Studentship. Overall, 60% of former doctoral fellows were found to be engaged in R&D activities in the National Science and Technology System (SNCT). The professional situation varies significantly depending on the start date of the Studentship the time elapsed since graduation.
