Carlos Salema (1942–2026)

The Governing Board of the FCT expresses its deepest condolences on the passing of Carlos Salema, former president of the Executive Board of the National Scientific Computing Foundation (1986–1989), the National Council for Scientific and Technological Research (1989–1992), and the Lisbon Academy of Sciences (2019–2021).

A leading figure in the telecommunications sector, he has conducted research in the field of electromagnetic radiation, particularly microwaves and radio waves and their various applications in communications.

Carlos Salema earned a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), completed his doctoral studies at Queen Mary College, University of London, and was awarded an honorary doctorate by ISCTE – Instituto Universitário de Lisboa in 2025. He was also a full professor at IST and President of the Telecommunications Institute, among other high-level positions held at national scientific and academic institutions.

The FCT shares in the grief of the family, friends, colleagues, and the scientific community, and offers its deepest condolences.
