In the second session of the “Archives of Knowledge: Science, History, and Memory” series, José Luiz Assis (IHC, University of Évora Campus) will present the results of his research in a presentation titled “Portugal and NATO: Science, Technology, and Scientific Diplomacy (1947–2010).” The event will take place on May 13 at 2:30 p.m. in the small auditorium at LNEC (Avenida do Brasil, No. 101, in Lisbon). Admission is free, subject to prior registration by May 12.

The study and in-depth analysis of NATO’s history of engagement and contribution to the progress of the Organization itself and its Allies allows for a better understanding of and greater insight into the Organization’s science policy, providing a rough idea of its actual importance in addressing the many challenges to peace and security. The scarcity of studies on this topic has contributed to its remaining on the margins of systematic and in-depth work by national and international researchers and scholars in the History of Science and the scientific and technological relationship among Alliance member countries. Through the research conducted by José Luís Assiz – Portugal and NATO (1947–2010): Science, Technology, and Scientific Diplomacy as Seen Through the FCT Archives – INVOTAN, it was possible to shed light on the internal and external evolution of Science, Technology, and Scientific Diplomacy produced in that environment, in such important aspects as the increasing complexity of Science, scientific languages, the thematic diversity under study, scientific programs, and conferences and key figures.

This session will also feature Daniel Gamito-Marques (NOVASchool of Science and Technology(NOVA FCT); Interuniversity Center for the History of Science and Technology (CIUHCT)), who will serve as moderator. The detailed program is available on the ACT website.

The “Archives of Knowledge: Science, History, and Memory” series is an initiative of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), organized through its Science and Technology Archive, and aims to host short sessions, in an environment of sharing and disseminating its documentary collection, which possesses unique characteristics for the history of scientific activity in Portugal.
