CMU Portugal Opens Call for Applications for 12 Dual Ph. Studentships s in ICT Fields

Applications are now being accepted for the competition to award up to 12 Dual Ph. Studentships , funded by FCT, under the Carnegie Mellon Portugal (CMU Portugal) Program, for the 2027/2028 academic year.

Studentships s are intended for students who wish to pursue advanced research in areas of excellence in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) through a joint academic program between Portugal and CMU in the United States.

To support potential applicants, the CMU Portugal Program is hosting an online information session on October 14, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. (Mainland Portugal) and 11:00 a.m. (Pittsburgh) to discuss the application process and the available programs. Participation is free, but registration is required, and all information is available on this page.

• Neural Computation (PNC)

Applications: by December 1, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. EST.

• Computer Science (CS)
• Human-Computer Interaction (HCI)
• Language Technologies (LTI)
• Machine Learning (ML)
• Robotics, Societal Computing (SC)
• Software Engineering (SE)

Applications: by December 9, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. EST.

• Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE)
• Engineering and Public Policy (EPP)

Applications: by December 15, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. EST.

The selected students will participate in the program on a dual-track basis, spending three years in Portugal and two years in Pittsburgh, under the joint supervision of researchers from the participating institutions. Upon completion of the program, they will receive two doctoral degrees: one awarded by CMU and the other by the Portuguese partner university.

Applications must be submitted directly to Carnegie Mellon University through the admissions platforms for each doctoral program.
