Call Health Research 2025 supports nine projects from Portuguese institutions

On November 20, the CosmoCaixa Science Museum in Barcelona hosted the ceremony celebrating the winning projects of the 2025 edition of the Call for Health Research from the ”la Caixa” Foundation.

Paula Diogo, Member of the Governing Board of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), represented the FCT at this event, which was attended by several representatives of the ”la Caixa” Foundation, as well as the researchers leading the 34 new projects selected for funding. Of these, nine are led by Portuguese institutions, which will receive a total of €4.9 million for the development of innovative projects with high social impact, covering various areas of cutting-edge biomedical research.

This Iberian initiative is carried out in Portugal through the association of FCT with Calls Health Research Calls , which, based on a matching funds approach, provided €1.8 million in support to three of the nine Portuguese projects awarded in this edition. In 2025, the Call also Call for its support for Portuguese projects that explore new approaches to preventive medicine and innovative therapies with a direct impact on public health.

Call supports basic, clinical, and translational research projects of scientific excellence and social impact in various areas: neurosciences, cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, oncology, infectious diseases, and enabling technologies in some of these fields. Since the program began in 2018, the total amount of Call ”la Caixa” Foundation's Health Call has reached €172.3 million for 234 projects, of which 162 are led by Spanish teams and 72 by Portuguese research groups. It is currently one of Calls leading Calls research in biomedicine and health in the Iberian Peninsula.
