João Monjardino Award 2022

João Monjardino Award Ceremony

The João Monjardino Prize 2022 will be awarded on 11 May, in a session that will take place in the Auditorium of the Instituto Nacional de Saúde Doutor Ricardo Jorge (INSA), starting at 02:30 PM. The event is open to the public and to attend it is necessary to register in advance by filling in this form. The ceremony will also be broadcast online at this link.

In 2022, the award was dedicated to the theme "Viral Diseases: Epidemiology, Etiopathogenesis and Control" and the winner of this edition was the researcher Joana Isidro, Master in Molecular Biology and Genetics and an integral member of the Genomics and Bioinformatics Unit of the Department of Infectious Diseases, of INSA, and the first author of the article "Phylogenomic characterization and signs of microevolution in the 2022 multi-country outbreak of monkeypox virus". The award-winning paper was published in the journal Nature Medicine on 24 June 2022, and explores the possible causes of the monkeypox outbreak, which was declared by the World Health Organization (WHO) as an International Public Health Emergency, and proposes an explanation for why the outbreak spread worldwide in early 2022.

The João Monjardino Award is an initiative of the Francisco Pulido Valente Foundation (FFPV) and the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), which annually distinguishes scientific work in a specific area of Biomedical and Health Sciences. The best article published under the proposed theme, which addresses research results and carried out by a researcher under 35 years old at the date of submission of the application, in an institution of the national scientific and technological system, receives a prize of 10,000 euros, which is shared equally by the two foundations.
