João Monjardino Award Ceremony

The João Monjardino Award 2022 ceremony will take place on May 11, in a session to be held in the Auditorium of the National Institute of Health Dr. Ricardo Jorge (INSA), starting at 2:30 p.m. The event is open to the public, and prior registration is required to attend, by filling out this form. The ceremony will also be broadcast online at this link.

In 2022, the award was dedicated to the theme "Viral Diseases: Epidemiology, Etiopathogenesis, and Control," and the winner of this edition was researcher Joana Isidro, who holds a master's degree in Molecular Biology and Genetics and is a member of the Genomics and Bioinformatics Unit of the Department of Infectious Diseases at INSA, and the first author of the article "Phylogenomic characterization and signs of microevolution in the 2022 multi-country outbreak of monkeypox virus." The award-winning article was published in the journal Nature Medicine on June 24, 2022, and explores the possible causes of the monkeypox outbreak, which was declared by the World Health Organization (WHO) as an International Public Health Emergency, and proposes an explanation for why the outbreak spread worldwide in early 2022.

The João Monjardino Award is an initiative of the Francisco Pulido Valente Foundation (FFPV) and the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), which annually recognizes scientific work in a specific area of Biomedical and Health Sciences. The best article published on the proposed theme, addressing research results and written by a researcher under the age of 35 at the date of submission of the application, at an institution within the national scientific and technological system, receives a prize of €10,000, which is shared equally by the two foundations.
