FCT presents National Center for Advanced Computing on January 31, 2025
The Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) is taking another step towards establishing the field of Advanced Computing in Portugal through the creation of the National Center for Advanced Computing (CNCA). This new institutional structure is funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan and is one of the actions included in measure RE-C05-i08 Ciência Mais Digital(More Digital Science), contracted between the FCT and the Recuperar Portugal (Recover Portugal) Mission Structure.
Initially, FCT will present the project to all potentially interested entities in an online session to be held on January 31, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. The aim is to ensure that CNCA begins its activities in a comprehensive and inclusive manner, involving as many partners from the National Science and Technology System as possible.
The commitment to Advanced Computing is essential for scientific and economic progress, enabling the development of new academic and scientific activities, promoting training, and stimulating technology-based business activities.
The CNCA was created with the purpose of managing, framing, monitoring, and promoting efforts to implement new Advanced Computing initiatives in Portugal, in order to realize the benefits they bring to the research and innovation communities.
As part of the session to be held, FCT invites interested parties tosendquestions they consider relevant to address tocnca-questoes@incd.ptby January 27. Any other questions or queries should also be sent to the same address. Advanceregistrationis required for the session, after which a link will be provided to ensure participation.
CNCA joins the other initiatives that FCT, through its digital services unit FCCN, has been developing in this technological area. Noteworthy in this context are the regular Calls computing projects and the funding of R&D projects in the area of Advanced Computing and its applications. The acquisition of national computing resources, within the framework of theEuropean High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking(EuroHPC JU) initiative, such as Deucalion and MareNostrum 5, and the expedited allocation of computing time on these new FCT supercomputers to the beneficiaries of any FCT projects already evaluated, are other good examples of the measures that have been adopted.
