FCT awards 1,488 Studentships for doctoral studies
Yesterday, December 5, FCT concluded the announcement of the final results of Call the Award of Studentships for Doctorates in All Scientific Fields 2023. A total of 1,488 new Studentships for doctorates were awarded : 1,156 in the General Application Line (approval rate of 37.5%) and 332 in the Specific Application Line in a Non-Academic Environment (approval rate of 75.3%).
The investment associated with these Studentships €115.3 million (€89.5 million in the general application line and €25.8 million in Studentships a non-academic environment), which corresponds to what was previously forecast on the date the Call was launched.
Analysis of the final results Call shows that, of the 1,488 Studentships Call, 56% will be awarded to women and 44% to men. In 81% of Studentships , the research will be carried out entirely in Portuguese institutions, 17% of Studentships mixed (part in Portuguese institutions and part in foreign institutions), and 2% will be carried out entirely in foreign institutions. 76% of the selected candidates are Portuguese nationals and, in total, candidates from 57 countries are proposed for funding, with Brazilian, Iranian, Italian, and Spanish nationals standing out among the foreign candidates. The scientific area of Engineering and Technology Sciences accounts for 24% of the applications proposed for funding, followed by Social Sciences (22%), Humanities (16%), Medical and Health Sciences (14%), Natural Sciences (10%), Exact Sciences (8%), and finally Agricultural Sciences (6%).
About half of the new scholarship recipients in non-academic environments plan to conduct research in companies, and more than 10% of the work plans in non-academic environments include research to be conducted in public administration entities. Among these 332 new Studentships approved for funding in this area, there will also be research carried out in hospitals, museums, technology and innovation centers, third sector entities, and others.
For the first time, the evaluation process saw an average renewal rate of 80% among panel members, expanding and diversifying the pool of experts who collaborate with FCT in evaluation processes.
