FCT releases results of the 2023 National Survey on Advanced Computing
The FCT, through its digital services unit FCCN, has published the 2023 National Advanced Computing Survey Report (INCA 2023), which assesses the needs for advanced computing resources and the impact of this technology on scientific and technological development in Portugal.
Among the main findings, there is a growing demand for computing capacity in areas such as biotechnology, artificial intelligence, and engineering. The report also identifies challenges in the existing infrastructure, highlighting the need for training and expansion of these resources to keep pace with scientific innovation. The Advanced Computing Projects (CPCA) and EuroHPC have been instrumental in ensuring access to these crucial tools for cutting-edge research.
The implementation of the recommendations in the report promises to have a substantial impact by ensuring that researchers and institutions can access advanced technologies. This factor accelerates the development of innovative solutions and strengthens national competitiveness. Thus, promoting a culture of collaboration and knowledge sharing can consolidate Portugal as an active member in the field of advanced computing at the European level.
For the next steps, INCA 2023 suggests that the data collected should serve as a basis for improving the National Advanced Computing Strategy. The aim is to promote sustainable and inclusive development and strengthen the country's scientific and technological capacity.
