Overview and Objectives
The Impact of Science on the Economy and Society in Portugal Award: Investment, scientific employment and the valorization of knowledge aims to encourage the writing of scientific articles that contribute to the identification of problems and the implementation of public policy solutions in Portugal.
Recipients and Eligibility
The articles must be original, of high scientific quality and allow conclusions to be drawn that are relevant to the various stages of public policy in Portugal (formulation, implementation and/or evaluation). The use of empirical data is preferred. Articles may be written in Portuguese or English.
How to apply
The Call has two stages, which are compulsory and whose deadlines will be included in the invitation:
- 1st phase - submitting a proposal or preliminary version of an article;
- 2nd phase - article submission
In the first phase, proposals or preliminary versions of articles should be sent to estudos@gee.gov.pt. Authors whose work meets the requirements of the call will be informed within 10 working days of their selection for the second phase.
In the second phase, authors must send their articles by the date indicated in the call for papers to estudos@gee.gov.pt. Each article must be sent as an attachment to the submission message, in Word format (.doc or .docx), without the authors' identification, and must follow the editing specifications indicated in the attachment. The body of the message must include the name, full postal address and e-mail address of the authors, and identification of the person responsible for correspondence (including cell phone contact).
Also in the second phase, the pre-selected articles will be subject to an evaluation process by a Scientific Committee, which will consider their scientific quality and their contribution to public policy solutions in Portugal. The final decision on the articles will be communicated to the authors.
Authors must provide all the information on the article requested by the Scientific Committee, and must give detailed reasons for not providing it in the event of a legal impediment.
Evaluation and Selection
In the second phase, the shortlisted articles will be evaluated by a Scientific Committee, which will consider their scientific quality and their contribution to public policy solutions in Portugal. The final decision on the articles will be communicated to the authors.
Authors must provide all the information on the article requested by the Scientific Committee, and must give detailed reasons for not providing it in the event of a legal impediment.
The Scientific Committee is made up of Anabela Marques dos Santos (JRC), António Bob Santos (FCT), António Braz Costa (CITEVE), Joana Almodovar (GEE), Joana Costa (UA), José Carlos Caldeira (INESC) and Vítor Corado Simões (ISEG).
The prizes are awarded on the basis of the Jury's ranking of the entries, which must take into account the following criteria:
- Originality - the work produces added value in relation to existing literature;
- Rigor - the work is well-founded and does not contain blatant errors or include unnecessary bibliography;
- Competence - the work is well-written, the argument is solid, it identifies limitations and uses appropriate methodology;
- Robustness - the results presented in the work are robust and the conclusions are appropriate given the results obtained;
- Relevance - the conclusions of the work are relevant in terms of public policies to be applied in Portugal.
Financing
The authors of the 4 best articles selected by the Scientific Committee will receive a prize of 3,000 euros (per article), on condition that they participate and present their articles at the Science 2023 event in July 2023.
