Defense + Science Program

The Program to Stimulate Scientific Research in the area of National Defense "Defense+Science" is a strategic initiative that aims to strengthen scientific and technological development and innovation in areas that are fundamental to National Defense, promoting coordination between the National Scientific and Technological System and the Defense sector.

The Program's mission is to create a solid and sustainable link between research institutions, universities, companies, defense-related entities, and the Armed Forces, promoting the transfer of

scientific knowledge for applications with operational, industrial, and strategic relevance.

This Program has the following objectives:

promote research, development, and innovation in areas that are fundamental to the operational capabilities of the Armed Forces, encouraging greater integration of military research centers into the national scientific and technological system, and also mobilizing civilian research centers on security and defense issues, with the aim of deepening and consolidating areas of knowledge relevant to National Defense and strengthening national strategic autonomy;
promote the defense economy through active coordination between companies, higher education institutions, civil and military research centers, and the Armed Forces;
promote the recognition and qualification of Armed Forces professionals;
encourage greater involvement by national industry in R&D&I programs, either in partnership with the Portuguese Armed Forces' research and experimentation centers and national higher education and research institutions, or through European Union (EU) cooperative programs, or within the framework of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
