ERAfrica - joint EU-Africa collaboration in science and technology

ERAfrica is an ERA-Net network funded under the European Union's 7th Framework and Technological Development Program (2010-2013). The network is a partnership of 13 R&D funding agencies, coordinated by the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD), France. The main objectives of the ERAfrica project are:
- Establish a long-term structure for communication, collaboration and coordination between the holders/managers of S&T cooperation programs in Europe and Africa;
- Strengthening EU-Africa collaboration in S&T, promoting joint learning among program holders/managers and identifying relevant instruments to effectively address the global challenges of sustainable development;
- Develop joint funding schemes and procedures between European and African program holders to support joint activities;
- Strengthen research capacities in Africa and improve the impact of research for development.
Call ERAfrica 2013: Results for Portugal in the only Call for Euro-African Collaborative Projects
- INnovative Conservation Agriculture Approaches: Food Security and Climate Action Through Soil and Water Conservation(INCAA), project participated by Gottlieb Basch, Univ. Évora, ICAAM, 82.778€, coordinated by Germany. Participating countries in the consortium: Germany, Kenya, Portugal, Austria and Burkina Faso (2014-2017);
- Tailored fermentation for delivery of wholegrain and cereal fibre-rich products: promoting dietary fiber intake in Africa and Europe(FIBRE-PRO), project participated by Elisabete Pinto, Catholic University of Porto, School of Biotechnology, 117.188€, coordinated by Finland. Participating countries in the consortium: Finland, Portugal, Kenya and Burkina Faso (2014-2017).

Related networks in which FCT participates and which contribute to the implementation of the Joint Euro-African Strategy (JAES) in science, technology and innovation: INCO-NET CAAST-NET Plus, CSA RINEA and ERA-NET Cofund LEAP-Agri (successor to ERA-NET ERAfrica for the launch of a joint Call ).
