ERDERA - European Rare Diseases Research Alliance, a European Partnership of the Horizon Europe program that follows on from the previous European Joint Programme on Rare Diseases, aims to support the coordination of research efforts between Member States, Associated Countries and non-European countries in the field of rare diseases (which, as a group of at least 7000 diseases, affect between 26 and 30 million people in Europe).
The specific nature of research in this field - naturally fragmented given the limited number of patients per disease and in different geographical areas, making it difficult to establish cohorts and acquire relevant knowledge and experience - is a paradigmatic example of an area of study that requires collaboration/coordination on a transnational scale.
ERDERA brings together more than 170 organizations from 37 countries, including FCT, the Agency for Clinical Research and Biomedical Innovation (AICIB), the University of Coimbra (UC) and the Dr. Ricardo Jorge National Health Institute (INSA).
