On February 11, 2019, an agreement was signed between the FCT and the Consortium for the Construction, Equipping and Exploitation of the Synchrotron Light Source (CELLS), with the aim of establishing the framework for collaboration between the parties, in the spirit of improving scientific and technical exchange, developing joint projects and facilitating access to scientific instrumentation in the institutions considered by the two scientific communities.
CELLS is a public consortium set up by an agreement between the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Autonomous Region of Catalonia in 2003, whose purpose is to build, equip and subsequently operate a Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory (ALBA), carrying out its activities in the field of synchrotron production and scientific use.
This agreement defines the conditions for collaboration and the possible initiatives, such as:
- Competitive access for national researchers to the laboratory under the same conditions as Spanish researchers;
- Portugal's participation as an observer in ALBA's Scientific and Advisory Committee (ALBA SAC), through the appointment of a Portuguese scientist of recognized merit;
- Creation of a joint post-doctoral program.
