The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC-UNESCO) was established in 1960 and is a functionally autonomous body, being the only organization within the United Nations system with competence in marine science.
National representation in this body is ensured by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the Portuguese Committee for the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (CP-COI), with the National Science and Technology sector represented by the FCT.
