OECD Working Party on the Economics of the Sea

The OECD launched the work of the Ocean Economy Group (STI Ocean Economy Group) with a view to developing forward-looking studies and knowledge in multisectoral and cross-cutting areas of the ocean economy. Until then, marine and maritime issues had been addressed by the OECD on a sectoral basis, as a sub-theme within broader groups, and in the shipbuilding group, which was entirely dedicated to maritime activity. To our knowledge, this is the only group of its kind in a multilateral cooperation institution, which also bears the OECD's seal of approval.

National participation in this OECD working group was ensured from the outset by the FCT and the Directorate-General for Maritime Policy (DGPM), with the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (FCG) participating in its first cycle. The FCT is represented in this working group by the Ocean Program in collaboration with the Studies and Planning Division. In addition to Portugal, countries such as the USA, Canada, China, Norway, Italy, and South Korea, among others, have participated in this group.

The work of this group is carried out in accordance with a two-year work plan previously discussed with the group of countries that decide to participate. The OECD's work is ensuring the standardization of analysis methodologies, enabling future comparability between countries and regions around the world, and is also highlighting trends that only studies of this scope can reveal. The work of this group has already led to the publication of several important and influential reports at the international level (see useful links below).
