Portuguese researcher wins GBIF Award 2023
Portuguese André Vicente Liz, a doctoral student at the Center for Research in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources (CIBIO-InBIO) at the University of Porto, was one of the winners of the GBIF 2023 Graduate Researchers Awards. He is the second Portuguese winner, after Raquel Gaião Silva from the University of Algarve was one of the winners in 2018. André Liz shares this year's award with Dorothy Akoth from Makerere University in Uganda, with both receiving €5,000.
André Liz, nominated by the Portuguese delegation of GBIF, was selected by a jury of experts in recognition of his integrated analysis of the genetic and spatial distribution patterns of 107 vertebrate species living in the Sahara-Sahel desert. This researcher has been supported by a Studentship from the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).
Portugal, with the support of FCT, is part of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility(GBIF), an international platform whose mission is to coordinate the standardization, digitization, and global dissemination of data on global biodiversity for the benefit of science and society.
Among other activities, GBIF launches Calls to foster research and innovation in the field of biodiversity informatics. Awards are given based on criteria of originality and innovation in the use and analysis of data published by GBIF, and on the impact on biodiversity and its conservation. Candidates are nominated by each National Delegation to GBIF.
